75 Years of the Fannie Stebbins Wildlife Refuge

The Fannie Stebbins Memorial Wildlife Refuge, located in Longmeadow, Massachusetts, has a rich history rooted in local conservation efforts. Established in 1951 by the Allen Bird Club, the refuge was named in honor of Fannie Adele Stebbins (1858–1949), a dedicated science teacher and revered naturalist who co-founded the club in 1912.

Initially encompassing approximately 59 acres, the refuge has expanded over the years to cover around 370 acres of diverse habitats, including floodplain forests, shrub swamps, and herbaceous marshes along the Connecticut River. These floodplain forests are among the rarest and most threatened natural communities in Massachusetts.

In 2017, a significant conservation milestone was achieved when the refuge became part of the Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge. This integration facilitated extensive restoration projects aimed at revitalizing 223 acres of rare floodplain forest. Efforts included planting native tree species, controlling invasive plants, and restoring natural hydrology by removing barriers that impeded water flow.

Today, the Fannie Stebbins Memorial Wildlife Refuge stands as the largest unfragmented area of natural floodplain vegetation in the Connecticut River Watershed. It serves as a vital habitat for a wide array of wildlife and offers visitors opportunities for wildlife observation, photography, fishing, and hiking.
