The Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge was established in 1997 to conserve, protect and enhance the abundance and diversity of native plant, fish and wildlife species and the ecosystems on which they depend throughout the 7.2 million acre Connecticut River watershed. Currently, the refuge is comprised of nearly 40,000 acres within parts of the four watershed states of New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Connecticut.
The Fannie Stebbins Unit runs alongside (and shares resources with) town of Longmeadow Conservation land. The Longmeadow Conservation Commission is an important partner in wetlands protection and in maintaining refuge adjacent properties. Additionally the Longmeadow Department of Public Works maintains roads, culverts, and other important features adjacent to the refuge.
The Connecticut River Watershed Partnership (CRWP) is a network of over 70 public and private organizations dedicated to forging partnerships that benefit wildlife, people, and environmental quality in the Connecticut River Watershed.
Fannie Stebbins Wildlife Refuge exists only because of the efforts of the Allen Bird Club which secured the land and incorporated the Refuge in 1951. The Club retained ownership and management of the refuge until the 2017 restoration project that ultimately led to the conveyance of the property to USFW. Allen Bird Club members remain active on the current Friends Board of Directors and continue to visit the refuge for year-round bird watching.
The Nature Conservancy in Massachusetts was an integral partner in the floodplain restoration project that was completed in 2019. They continue to own some of the property upon which the restoration took place.

Connecticut River Conservancy collaborates with regional partners to restore and advocate for the CT river, and educates and engages communities. At Stebbins the Conservancy helps us keep pond invasives such as water chestnut at bay.
